BREAKFAST is meant to be an experience.
At the
Loghouse, this bountiful meal occurs on the screen porch or
in front of the fire in the parlor. At the Homestead,
service is in-room on linen-dressed teacarts, while the
Suite has its own breakfast room. Fresh- squeezed orange
juice and fresh-ground coffee are "de rigueur." A variety of
main dishes (crepes, eggs benedict, stratas and gratins, as
well as several kinds of French toast are some examples)
paired with local sausage and fresh fruit. All breads and
sweets are fresh from the oven.

Homestead Rooms
The Homestead, original
to the property, was built in 1902 by Swedish immigrants
Gust Fredholm and his wife Kristina. TODAY, its lakeside

wicker-filled porch, central air conditioning and
three lovely bedrooms (each with
bath), offer guests luxury and comfort. All of the rooms
are equipped with full

JOHN LEJINS, a Canadian author, writes, of the Fredholm Suite, "When the light is more subdued the design of the suite, the
color scheme and the relative austerity of the furnishings altogether create an almost ecclesiastical, reverential atmosphere. On winter nights, guests lying on the queen-size bed can easily imagine while gazing through the skylights that all the stars revolve just around Spirit Lake."

The
LOGHOUSE, just across the meadow from the Homestead, was
built circa 1889
by the innkeeper's great-great grandparents Peter and Anna
Jensen. It was moved
intact 80 miles from northern Minnesota with the innkeeper's
85 year-old grandfather
perched atop the roof to raise power lines with a wooden
"fork". It now rests on a
knoll overlooking Spirit Lake. Its logs still wear their
original whitewash. Newspaper
fragments found in the walls have been framed and hang
throughout the house. Two
especially well preserved pieces carry the original Jensen
mailing label.

ANNA'S
ROOM, below the parlor,
gives onto a lakeside deck and
screen porch. It's private bath
has a standard tub with shower
and sports an antique washstand
and mirror. A dated Norwegian
chest and trunk are special
antiques. A loveseat and chair
offer lakeview seating. Waking
to a rising sun streaming through
the oversized glass doors is one
of the special joys of this room. |

MATILDA'S
ROOM, above the parlor,
is furnished entirely with antiques
--even its king bed. The Jensen
immigrant trunk rests at its foot.
The sloped ceiling and visible logs
attest to its being the original bedroom
to the house. Doorknobs and hooks
from an old church hold towels in its
private bath (shower only). the
screen porch off the main floor parlor
is exclusively for Matilda's Room
use, except during breakfast.
